DUST MITE

About 40% of the population suffer from allergies 50% of these are children. The number of sufferer’s varies little between the Scottish Highlands and our inner cities. Many believe their allergic reactions are caused by pets, pollens, pollution, smoking, over excitement or even over exertion. Whilst these may trigger an allergy attack the underlying cause is often the House Dust Mite.

Facts You Should Know About the Dust Mite

1.In an average home there are more than 2 million dust mites.
2.They are so small they cannot be seen with the naked eye- in fact 100 will fit on a Pin head.
3.Dust mites do not bite sting or transmit diseases.
4.They feed on the protein from our dead skin cells.
5.It is their harmful faeces which cause the greatest problems. When disturbed they stay airborne for more than 10 minutes in which time they are inhaled into our lungs. Each dust mite can produce 20 droppings or pellets per day which contain the still active enzyme.
6.The egg laying female can lay 25-30 eggs every three weeks. The adults live for up to two months.
7.Some 80% of people who suffer from allergies are allergic to the dust mite.
8.On average 1/10th of the weight of a two year old carpet (that has not been cleaned) will be dust mite faeces.
